Course Selection and Funding Requests
The Fund is dedicated to empowering incarcerated students who are serious about pursuing their educational aspirations. However, first-time applicants should initially only apply for one or two courses. After you complete these courses with at least a 3.5 GPA, the Fund will consider future funding requests. While the Fund does not have strict guidelines or cost limitations for request amounts, you should keep in mind that often the decision to grant scholarship funding is an economic one. Thus, if your request is what we consider excessive, you will most likely not receive funding.

Tips for Success
The successful candidate will present a well-articulated application and a coherent plan for the use of scholarship funds to further his or her educational goals. This means that you will need to know what college or university you want to attend, which course(s) you want to take, how much it will cost, etc. You will need to research your plan.

Application Due Dates
The Dirk Van Velzen Scholarships will be judged quarterly at the end of March, June, September, and December. New applications and questions will be prepared for each quarter. Be sure you have the current application and make certain it physically arrives at our office before the end of the quarter for which you are applying, postmark notwithstanding.

Award Notification
The awardees of the Dirk Van Velzen Scholarship will be notified by mail. Funds will be placed on deposit with the college or university; any unused portions shall be returned to the Prison Scholar Fund. Awardees’ personal information may be posted on the Prison Scholar Fund’s Web site and/or included in organizational news releases.
